American Idol– A few years ago, the producers of American Idol and AT&T teamed up to allow Idol viewers to vote on their favorite contestants via SMS. In 2008, fans voted in record numbers, sending in 78 million text messages. In 2008, AT&T expanded their Idol efforts to include “voting reminders, trivia, a TXT-n-Win sweepstakes promising the winner $50,000 cash and a trip for two to the Idol series finale in Los Angeles, and contestant ringtones and video clips featuring outrageous audition moments.”

President Barack Obama’s 2008 Election Campaign – Political historians will be studying Barack Obama’s historic campaign for decades to come. There is one thing that everyone already agrees upon – Obama’s New Media team leveraged the web, social networks, and text messaging in unprecedented ways to communicate with supporters, recruit donors, and enhance get-out-the-vote (GOTV) efforts. Famously, the Obama campaign announced their Vice Presidential selection of Joe Biden to opted in subscribers via text message. The message went out to 2.9 million mobile phones. The phone numbers went into the campaign database.

Finally, when Election Day came, supporters received text messages reminding them to vote. This was much more than a nifty way to end a campaign that exploited text messaging so successfully – research has found that SMS is more effective than all GOTV methods other than old fashioned door-to-door canvassing. Canvassing may be more effective at turning out votes, than text messaging, but it costs nearly 20x as much per recruited vote.

The American Red Cross – The American Red Cross raised $190,000 dollars in 2008 with its Text 2HELP program. The program is activated during major disasters. According to The Wireless Foundation, “subscribers of participating wireless carriers can send a text message to „2HELP“ (24357) containing the word „GIVE.“ A $5 tax-deductible donation will be made to the American Red Cross for disaster relief efforts. Donations will appear on customers‘ monthly bills or be debited from a prepaid account balance.”

In 2008, the Text 2HELP campaign was advertised across various communications channels, and received its biggest boost when both Presidential candidates called their constituents to action. During the Republican National Convention, Mike Duncan, the chairman of the RNC, asked convention attendants to take out their mobile phones and text in a donation. The Obama campaign leveraged their own text messaging campaign to aid the Red Cross, sending their entire database of subscribers a message asking them to text GIVE to 24537 (2HELP).

Now once you reply and start texting back and forth, you can have a normal text convo and you don’t have to keep your hunk in suspense with a long pause except when you want to crank up your sex appeal.

Tip #3: Don’t text him at strange times of the day

If you text a guy at 2am, he’s going to think you are desperate. You should be sleeping at 2am, not thinking about him, if you have a full life and things to do the next day.

Also, if you know there are certain times during the day when he can’t respond to your text right away like when he’s in class or at work, text him when you know he has a break or is off work.

You end the convo first. And yeah, you need to make him pick up the phone and talk to you. Real guys pick up the phone to confirm plans.

How to Read Guitar Music, Chords and Notes

In order to play the guitar, you need to learn how to read guitar music. Learning and understanding it may sound complicated but once you get used to it, it is actually quite simple and can be done in a breeze.

To play guitar music, first you must understand the basic chord patterns and what they are. A guitar chord is a sound composed of different notes being played on the guitar. Once you know the chord formation then you can start building the chord progression patterns to play a whole decent song.

In order to read the guitar music you must first understand the common terms, and the first on this example are the major chords. Major chords are the major notes. It’s the most basic chords used in guitar playing. The major chords are composed of series of notes from the chromatic scale (the major scale C, D, E, F…) without alteration.

Then there are the Minor chords. Minor chords are also chords based on the major scale but instead of the normal notes used on a chord, the 2nd note should be a half step lower, so if the C chord is made up of C,E, and G notes, the Cm chord will have a C D# and G note. Major and Minor chords are the common chords used in a chord progression.

Another thing you need to learn is the flats and sharps. Flats are chords lowered by half a step and sharps are the opposite or chords which are a half step higher. This tiny information is indeed needed in order to understand well how to read guitar music.

In order to read chords you need to know the chords abbreviations and what they would look like in a song sheet. A major chord like for example a C major can be written as C and a C major 7 (a C chord with an additional 7th note) can be written as CM7. For minor chords a C minor can be written as Cm. A flat can be symbolized by a small letter „b“ and in E chord it can be written as Eb and Sharps are written using the universal symbol of „#“ and in C chord it can be written as C#.

There are two types of song sheet or guitar music sheet, there’s the tablature and the simple chord sheet. The tablatures are figures of music bars and each bar signifies as strings on guitar. The numbers on the tablature sheet shows which strings are to pressed and on what fret. While the chord sheet on the other hand are simply the song with lyrics and the chords above them, the timing of chord changing is based on where it is positioned above the lyrics. The chord sheet is the type we often used and often found on basic song books.

Learning how to read guitar music is a tough process and needs a lot of dedication and hard work, But with the right materials and research, you’ll get used to it and reading guitar music would be as simple as reading a text message shortcuts.

Authentic English Language Text

In English as a foreign or second language teaching (EFL, ESL), if you ever need to come up with an authentic English text of any kind, i.e., newspaper, magazine, movie clip, etc. that you need to present to the class and you’ve been powerfully influenced by music your whole life you might chose to take the song approach. You’ll be okay using a popular song as authentic language text – which it certainly is. I’d go with popular songs, like „Imagine“ by John Lennon, which have more appeal. You can get some additional mileage out of the song using cultural aspects as well as some others. Profiling, doing a biography of and discussing John Lennon as an example in this case. Here are some ways to go about it.

Select and Concept Check the Lexis

Be sure to select at least six to eight key lexis (minimum) from the song. To aid in concept checking you should create a series of short exercises such as:

o a True – False exercise

o a short matching exercise and perhaps

o a fill in the blanks exercise

In each of these exercises you’ll be using the lexis (vocabulary) you’ve chosen. You might also try to find a few pictures or photos to visually – graphically illustrate both the key lexis and themes or phrases from the song. You can also prepare a re-order exercise using the song lyrics by cutting the lyrics into strips, mixing them up and having the learners re-order the lyrics line strips of the song by listening to it.

Re-Ordering Sequences

Play the song again afterwards to have learners check their re-ordered sequence. Try to have a picture or drawing that represents each of your chosen lexis for you to use to help elicit the key lexis from the learners before they hear the song. For a REAL test of this system (which I regularly use, by the way) is to find and use a song that you think the learners don’t know! You’ll get kudos for this one for sure. It’s especially effective when the class is multi-cultural; that is, composed of learners from different countries and diverse language backgrounds. (Russia, Iran, South Korea, Mexico, and so on) Using a snappy but „unknown“ song will help to ensure a ample amount of „learning“ on the part of your students, in more ways than one.

Finding Unique Songs

So how would you find such songs – easy; just check out songs from other genres, songs sung in other varieties of English and popular songs from past eras aka „oldies but goodies“.

Some suggestions you might consider include:

o country and western

o oldies from the 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and 70’s

o jazz vocals

o soul or rhythm and blues songs (especially from previous eras)

o comedy songs

o Bluegrass songs

o Folk songs

o Ballads

Process Need Not Be Difficult

If you don’t have the time or inclination to do the extra preparation you can just go with the activities I’ve mentioned for your presentation. The process needn’t be overly difficult at all.

I think texting rocks!  It means that no matter what you are doing you can be in touch with and connected to your loved ones.  Texting has absolutely deepened our dating and love relationships.  Now your „A“ level friends and lovers can be in a constant secret dialogue with you.  Of course texting can be overdone and work in reverse: how many times have you seen others texting away and ignoring you or others they are with?  As a psychologist I can tell you that there are certain times when that is a recipe for disaster.  So you want to take advantage of texting, but in a clever, balanced way.

My dating and love advice is to use your quick-talking thumbs to deepen your relationships in a thoughtful way.  And certainly make sure that texting does not backfire and hurt your relationship with a hottie!   With that in mind, here are 10 deadly mistakes to avoid when you are dating or in a relationship:

1. Texting is a good way to reach out and follow up with someone you’ve just met. It is a more immediate way of telling the person you’re interested and would like to see him/her again. But if the text is too long and you’re running on about stuff that has nothing to do with your date, it can be an immediate turn-off; your new connection may suddenly disappear into the dating netherworlds.

2. Similarly, if you’re just starting out, don’t over-text.  This behavior can be interpreted as being overanxious. Remember you’re just testing the waters. As the relationship becomes more serious, you can slowly increase the frequency of communications in order to plan things together, get emotional support or advice, and ultimately to send love messages.

3. Mass texting to ask people out on a date is a desperate act and will backfire later if people compare notes.

4. Texting during a date is simply bad manners.  SMSing when you’re conversing with someone else is as rude as taking an unnecessary call. What do you think it says about you?

5. Similarly, using text as a habitual way of avoiding speaking on the phone with a partner or lover is sometimes the shy way out and doing so will never get you over your communication fears.  You have to come face-to-face with your partner and practice straight truthful talk in order to have a whole and lasting relationship.

6. Revealing something embarrassing in writing is never a good idea. Lewd or overly sexual remarks can catch the recipient off-guard (as at work) and compromise or fluster them. The message can also be shown to others — making you look like a less-than-stellar catch.

7. Late night texts should be avoided. While many people turn their phones off at night, others forget to do so and there’s nothing more annoying than those beeps awakening you.  Worse than that, women can often see late night texts as simple booty calls and find them extremely insulting.

8. Too many steamy or romantic texts make you come across as desperate, needy and intrusive in a love relationship. Remember that less is more. Therefore, wait until your partner responds before you retext.

9. Breaking up with someone by text is a definite no-no. Ending a love relationship in this way or by email are signs of cowardice and disrespect both toward yourself and the other person. If at all possible deliver the bad news in person or at the very least in a phone conversation.

10. Driving and texting don’t mix. It’s dangerous and your date will rightly worry about your judgment.

Texting is definitely a new means of courting, bonding, creating emotional connection, and planning dates and activities together. But be careful of how you use SMS as it is a two-edged sword and can ruin a relationship. Did You Text Your Ex? Here’s How To Respond To Their Response

After you take a break from your ex and then decide it’s now time to try and text your ex back, you may find yourself in a dilemma. It’s hard enough trying to figure out what to say in those first few text messages to your ex. But that’s not your only problem.

What happens when your ex responds? What do you say then? How do you respond to their response?

Hopefully you were careful about the first few texts you sent. After all, you shouldn’t be trying to get your ex back right off the bat.

Instead, you simply want to open the lines of communication and give your ex the opportunity to start a conversation, but only if he or she wants to. Your first few texts should never put any pressure on your ex to respond.

So let’s assume you did that and sent a good „across the bow“ text to get the ball rolling. Maybe it was something like, „Just caught myself thinking of you when I heard that Adele song you love. Hope you’re doing great.“

Now it’s a waiting game. How is your ex going to respond? There are 4 possible scenarios.

1.) No response at all

2.) A neutral response

3.) A positive response

4.) A negative response

If you get no response at all, it’s ok. Don’t worry about it. Your ex may not be ready to hear from you. Wait a few days or a week and then try again with another text message variation. Whatever you do, don’t start sending them message after message asking them why they aren’t replying to you.

A neutral response is something like, „Thanks“ or „I’m ok, thanks. You?“ If your ex responds like this, you may be tempted to reply back and get into a big long conversation with them. But you shouldn’t. Instead, reply in a friendly, but equally as neutral way and end the conversation.

For example, „I’m good. Hey, I gotta run, but nice hearing from you. Bye for now.“

More than likely you won’t get a super positive response unless you broke up with your ex and they’re excited to hear from you because they weren’t ready for the relationship to end. If they broke up with you, they may also have realized they made a mistake and may therefore be extremely happy to hear from you.

Again, don’t get into a long conversation. Treat this much like a neutral response. Reply back that you’re doing great, it was awesome to hear from them but you have to go, and then end the conversation. This will keep them missing you and longing for you even more.

Lastly, if you get an extremely negative response from your ex, then you will need to give them more time. In this case, don’t text them again for several weeks. If they say something like, „I’m still really hurt and really don’t want to talk to you right now“ just reply with something like „Sorry. I totally understand. Hope you’re doing well.“

No matter what response you get from your ex, always be the one to end the conversation first and resist the urge to get into a long, drawn out conversation. It’s extremely hard to resist the urge to talk to them more, especially when you get a positive response, but you’ll put yourself in a much better position to win them back if you keep them wanting more.
