What Are the Musical Notes? The Secrets to the Musical Alphabet

[ad_1]

When learning any language, it is important to learn its alphabet first. The language of music has an alphabet just like any other. One uses these letters to build words and sentences. In music, we use them to build melodies and chords.

Alphabets

The musical alphabet is actually easier than english if you think about it. When one starts learning the piano, they begin by using the white keys first. This is also known as the C Major scale, and it has only 7 notes: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and then C again. Any musical scale will began and end on the same note. The only difference between this alphabet, and the English alphabet, is that it starts on C, not A, and continues only to G, before starting over.

This is a great first step towards learning any piece of music, because as long as it’s a simple tonal piece, it is played using one of these 7 notes. Heck, some pieces only use 5 notes. Some song melodies that are played using only the first 5 notes, C through G, are „Ode to Joy“, „Mary Had a Little Lamb“, and „Hot Cross Buns“.

Most melodies are played by using only the white notes of the piano. The next question is, which notes do you play. Sheet music was then developed as a standard way of reading these notes of any piece. In addition to the melody of a song, it is important for it to have accompaniment. The accompaniment of a melody is often called its chord structure. A vocalist can only sing a melody, but needs a pianist to play the chords that go with that melody.

The First Step

Just learning the notes of the piano is a great start for your musical adventure. In English, letters make words and words make sentences. In music, letters make chords, and chords, with melodies, make phrases, and phrases make forms, like a rondo, or a song form. One very common form is the popular song, which consists of a couple verses, a chorus, and a bridge. These notes make the building blocks.

Now there’s much more to playing the piano than just playing the white keys, which happens to be the same letters as the first seven letters of the English alphabet. It is very important to grasp this concept before continuing on to chords, sharps, flats, and keys. This is just the first step of your musical journey. There are many more steps to come.
